After seeing black veils stretched across models’ faces at Chanel’s Spring ’15 Couture show, it was only a matter of time before a starlet made the same statement on the crimson carpet. Leave it to Lily Collins—clad in Look 44 from the collection—to bring the birdcage beauty look to the Met Gala. “We talked about doing the makeup as seen at the show,” said makeup artist Molly Stern of the band of taupe shadow dramatically washed across eyes. “We tried it, but her brows are such a strong feature that we lost something about Lily.” Instead, the team turned to Audrey Hepburn, who would have celebrated her 86th birthday yesterday, and made her their muse. Keeping the traditional cat-eye shape, Stern twisted the classic concept by reaching for bright blue (Lancôme’s Liner Design Long Wear Calligraphy Gel Eyeliner in Indigo Darling), a hue popular among attendees like Constance Jablonski, Alicia Keys, Solange Knowles, and Lorde. “I treated the bottom of the skirt as if it were a watercolor palette, so I dipped into the pale pinky nude and navy-teal,” explained Stern. “I love doing an eye like this because I want to show women that you can actually wear blue eyeliner and not look like your granny.” A stiff liquid liner brush was used to apply the wing across the top and a fluffier version was employed to smudge the pigment along the bottom lashes for a diffused finish.
Kjaer Weis Cream Blush in Embrace (an organic beauty brand
recently cited on Style.com) was used to enhance the contours of Collins’
cheeks, while Lancôme Blush Subtil Crème in Coral Alize was popped onto the
apples. A vibrant orange-red lipstick was softened with a layer of light peach
to produce a pout that was intense but “not Technicolor.” Navy mascara “twisted
the dial a little bit,” but wasn’t nearly as avant-garde as the Siouxsie
Sioux-inspired maquillage Collins and Stern devised for the punk-themed ball in
2013. Before the net was put on, brows were tamed with a touch of Gorilla Snot
gel on a clean mascara wand. “We were having a little bit of an issue with her
lash getting caught on the net, but those are the fashion moments that you just
have to deal with!” laughed Stern.
